Osmani – Berdimuhamedov: OSCE Centre in Ashgabat provides expertise and resources for further improvement of reforms in Turkmenistan

Skopje, 9 October 2023 (MIA) – The OSCE – Turkmenistan cooperation, the country's international and regional cooperation, climate change and the protection of the environment were the topics of discussion at a meeting Monday between OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani, and the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, held in Ashgabat, as part of Osmani’s visit to Central Asia.

“The OSCE Centre in Ashgabat has excellent cooperation with the national institutions and state agencies, as well as with civil society. The expertise and resources that it possesses can contribute to the further improvement of domestic reforms, especially in the fields of good governance, protection of the environment, economic strengthening of women, fight against family violence, and gender equality,” said Osmani at the meeting, according to a press release by the Foreign Ministry.

Osmani and Berdimuhamedov spoke about the country’s international relations as well as the United Nations resolution initiated by Turkmenistan, as a result of which Central Asia was declared a zone of peace, trust and cooperation.

The press release highlighted climate change as one of the challenges that are currently affecting the OSCE region, and noted that tackling them is high on the agenda of North Macedonia’s Chairpersonship. To that end, Osmani said a Special Representative on Climate Change has been designated, which, he said, “represents a new approach, for the first time in OSCE’s history, securing political support for OSCE’s commitments.”

“This is especially important since climate change affects the overall security of the OSCE region, and that effect can be mitigated through a joint regional response,” said Osmani.

Osmani welcomed Turkmenistan’s active contribution to the mitigation of the consequences of climate change by aligning the work of key ports in the country with the best environmental practices, as a result of which the Turkmenbashi seaport received an EcoPort certificate, said the press release.
