One killed as retirement home hit in Russian attack on Ukraine's Sumy

Kiev, 19 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Russian shelling has killed one person and injured several more in a retirement home in the north-eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy.

"At this point, unfortunately, one person has been killed and nine have been injured," Governor Volodymyr Artyukh said on Ukrainian television on Thursday.

The injured were taken to hospital, he said.

Television images showed volunteers tending to older people in wheelchairs and on stretchers.

According to Artyukh, more than 200 people had been inside the nursing home at the time of the attack, some of whom were in need of care.

Over the past few days, the Russian military has repeatedly attacked critical infrastructure in the Sumy area, particularly in the regional capital, using missiles, glide bombs and drones.

The electricity and water supply in Sumy has since been disrupted.

At the beginning of August, Ukrainian troops launched their surprise incursion into the neighbouring Russian region of Kursk from Sumy.

Ukraine has been fighting off a Russian invasion for over two and a half years.
