North Macedonia takes in 131 UN employees from Afghanistan
Skopje, 5 November 2021 (MIA) – A group of 131 Afghan citizens arrived yesterday at the Skopje International Airport. North Macedonia has offered the refugees, who worked for the United Nations in Afghanistan, shelter until they are permitted to settle in third countries.
“The country continues to help the international humanitarian campaign in sheltering civilians after the Taliban took over power in Afghanistan,” the government said in a press release.
Security checkups and PCR tests, which are part of a standard procedure, were conducted when the plane landed.
Costs for the accommodation in Skopje will be fully covered by the United Nations.
A total of 531 Afghan citizens are staying in the country at the moment. So far, 84 Afghans left North Macedonia after getting permanent residencies in France, Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Brazil.
