No diseases reported so far amid Skopje waste crisis: doctor

Skopje, 30 October 2025 (MIA) – So far, no diseases have been reported that may be in direct connection with the uncollected waste in Skopje, however, the residents must be careful until the waste is collected, said doctor Dragan Kochinski, an epidemiologist who serves as head of the Public Health Institute’s Department of Epidemiology.

“Hands should be washed frequently especially after throwing out garbage. Gloves are recommended still as an option when throwing out garbage. Hands should be disinfected and garbage should be disposed at designated sites. Illegal landfills must not be created, which will prevent diseases from spreading. Also, the authorities in charge of waste collection are urged to collect waste regularly so as not to be faced with similar situations again,” doctor Kochinski said Thursday speaking to members of the media.

In recent weeks, uncollected waste blocked streets in Skopje. Referring to Public Health Institute’s recommendations, he said they should be followed when waste is pilling up so as to protect individual and public health.
