New group of Peace Corps volunteers arrives in Skopje

Skopje, 24 September 2024 (MIA) - A new group of 38 Americans arrived in North Macedonia on Monday to serve as Peace Corps. They will stay for two years volunteering in different institutions and organizations around the country, sharing their experiences and knowledge.

Peace Corps Country Director David Reside and several employees welcomed the volunteers at the Skopje International Airport yesterday.

"The Peace Corps welcomes the arrival of 38 Americans in the country, the 27th group of Peace Corps volunteers to serve in North Macedonia, living and working in different communities around the country. The Peace Corps is grateful for the cooperation with the Government and our partners, through which we have managed to support almost 900 volunteers, starting from 1996 and until today," Reside said.

During their two-year stay in the country, the new volunteers will be giving English language classes in schools and helping non-governmental organizations and municipalities implement various community development programmes.

"The Peace Corps has excellent cooperation with its local and national partners, and implements its programs in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science and Ministry of Local Self-Government," Peace Corps North Macedonia said in a press release.

This is the 27th group of volunteers who will live and work in cities and villages across North Macedonia. During the first three months, volunteers will learn local languages and acquaint themselves with the Macedonian culture starting in December. The Peace Corps began its mission in North Macedonia in 1996 with 800 volunteers so far. ssh/sk/
