The probe focuses on Leonid Volkov and Ivan Zhdanov and their ties to the FBK organization. Both sought to raise online donations for the group which was founded by Navalny, who has been in jail for months for violating the terms of bail after his release from prison on embezzlement charges. Navalny could not report to his bail officer because he was in Germany, recovering from a poisoning attempt that is widely believed to be linked to the Kremlin. Two months ago, a Moscow court ruled that Navalny's anti-corruption and political organizations were extremist in nature and thus outlawed, a move that was widely viewed as politically motivated. Zhdanov, who was the director of the donations fund, wrote on Instagram that he has long since stopped counting the legal proceedings against him. He said the new case is "sleazy" but could land him in jail for eight years. He called the case "nonsense," adding that "the government is crazy and, in its obsessions, dangerous."
