Athens, 9 November 2022 (MIA) — Public transit, rail, sea and air travel, and many other services have been disrupted in Greece on Wednesday after major labor unions called for a nationwide strike over low wages and poor working conditions, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports. Strike organizers, the General Confederation of Greek Workers and the Civil Servants' Confederation, said they were also protesting against government policies that have made "the rich richer and the poor poorer." The strike started at 6 am. Ships will remain anchored for 24 hours. In Athens and Thessaloniki, public transport has been stopped until Thursday morning, including taxi, subway, and bus service. Public servants and teachers have also joined the strike. Reporters, as well, so there will be no coverage of news in the media. Unionists said that workers in the public and private sectors were barely coping with high energy prices and falling purchasing power. “The sharp increase in prices of electricity, fuel, basic products, and 12 percent inflation has wiped out workers’ wages, pushing them into poverty. “Workers were already living in a state of permanent crisis, having paid for the 12-year economic crisis while the country’s oligarchs were amassing wealth and profits. “Now is the time to end this policy that makes the rich richer and the poor poorer,” the unions said ahead of the strike. Unionists are holding street protests in several Greek cities. In Athens, the Communist Party Union and SYRIZA party supporters will join the two major labor unions' rallies. mr/
