Skopje, 17 June 2025 (MIA) - Dynamic geopolitical developments have reinforced the need for North Macedonia to speed up the transition to renewable energy sources and greater energy independence. The country remains an active and committed partner in the regional energy transformation process. Through a visionary approach, a harmonized regulatory framework and strong international partnerships, it not only responds to global challenges, but also actively contributes to shaping them, Minister of European Affairs Orhan Murtezani said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a panel on "Financing the Energy Ambition", held as part of Mapping the Energy Future of the Western Balkans (MEF-WB) Energy Forum 2025, Murtezani pointed out that the Government has revised the National Energy and Climate Plan to fully align it with the European Green Deal and the Energy Community Treaty. In addition, he said, all available financing instruments, including the Western Balkans Investment Framework and IPA III, have been mobilized.
In this context, the Minister highlighted the importance of regional integration, joint infrastructure projects and flexible financing models as a prerequisite for a sustainable transition.

As regards priority sectors and investments, he highlighted four main areas: renewable energy production, modernization of the electricity grid, energy efficiency, and transport electrification.
"In these areas, the Government is actively implementing initiatives that aim not only to accelerate the transition to green energy sources, but also to ensure sustainable energy infrastructure, better urban transport and improve the energy performance of public buildings. The emphasis is on solutions that are long-term sustainable, socially inclusive and aligned with European and regional goals," said Murtezani.
The MEF-WB Energy Forum aims to move from ideas to real investments through joint engagement, which will bring a cleaner, safer and more competitive energy future for the entire region. This regional event is being held for the eighth year in a row and represents a platform for deepened cooperation between the countries in the region and joint approach towards an accelerated green transition and full decarbonization by 2050.
