Moscow's atomic agency warns of worsening situation in Kursk

Moscow, 18 August 2024 (dpa/MIA) – Russian state atomic agency Rosatom has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about a worsening situation at the Kursk nuclear power plant and the Moscow-occupied Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

Rosatom chief Alexei Likhachov, in a phone call on Friday, invited IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to visit the Kursk region to see the situation at the plant and the associated town of Kurchatov for himself, Rosatom told the Russian news agency Interfax in Moscow.

There are multiple air-raid alarms daily due to the threat of Ukrainian attacks, Rosatom said.

According to Russian reports, missile parts were recently found on the Kursk nuclear power plant site.

The Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which Russia has occupied for almost two and a half years following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, is also repeatedly the target of attacks or acts of sabotage.

Moscow and Kiev blame each other for this. The IAEA has stationed observers in the Zaporizhzhya plant.
