More than 200,000 migrants apprehended on US southern border in July

More than 200,000 migrants apprehended on US southern border in July

Some 213,000 people were caught trying to illegally cross the United States' southern border in July, around 172,000 more than the same month last year, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said on Thursday.

That figure was at its highest level in a good 20 years in July. The threshold of 200,000 migrants per month was last exceeded in 2000. Most of them are currently being deported immediately by US authorities. The number of arrests rose to 180,000 in May and 189,000 in June. The border police said that a good quarter of all migrants apprehended in July were repeat offenders, having already been picked up and deported at least once in the previous year. The number of unaccompanied children and minors caught at the border rose by a quarter in July to almost 19,000, CBP said. President Joe Biden's administration is under increasing pressure because of the large number of migrants and refugees arriving on the southern border. Republicans accuse Democrat Biden of sparking a crisis on the border with his more liberal migration policies.
