Montenegro: Crypto founder Do Kwon gets four months for visa fraud

Pristina, 19 June 2023 (dpa/MIA) - A court in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica on Monday sentenced Do Kwon, a South Korean cryptocurrency founder who was internationally wanted, to four months in prison.

According to the court, Kwon was guilty of document forgery when he tried to leave Montenegro in March using a forged passport from Costa Rica. Kwon and his South Korean business partner were arrested during the attempt to leave the country.

The Monday verdict is not final.

Kwon created the cryptocurrencies Terra and Luna in Singapore. However, the Terra-Luna system collapsed spectacularly in May last year, with investors left empty-handed.

The bankruptcy is said to have caused losses of $40 billion.

Kwon then disappeared. Interpol issued an international arrest warrant for him in September. He is also wanted by authorities in South Korea and the United States.

Last week, a court in Podgorica imposed a six-month extradition detention on Kwon and his business partner - independent of the document forgery case - to examine South Korea's extradition request.
