Mitsotakis: Skopje should understand it cannot play games with Athens over name issue

Athens, 20 June 2024 (MIA) – You’re asking me what is happening, I’m telling you, we cannot keep on doing this. The premier of North Macedonia, if he goes on with this rhetoric once he takes office, he will find himself in a very unpleasant position when we meet at the NATO summit, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a radio interview involving the position of the PM-designate Hristijan Mickoski over the use of the name Macedonia, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports.

The Prespa Agreement, he stated, provided one name to be used everywhere, there is no double formula and denying this may trigger issues in the relations with Greece, with NATO and the EU.

The Greek PM once again reiterated he will raise the issue at the NATO summit, due in the first half of July.

“I’ll definitely do it and I believe I’ll have many allies in this. Skopje should understand that it cannot play games with Athens over this, because if the country had pressed for a double name, the issue would have been closed many years ago. Skopje joined NATO as a result of the agreement, which has its flaws, but it provided one name for all and if this is denied, North Macedonia should be aware it will have major problems, not only in its bilateral relations with Greece, but also in its relations with NATO and the EU, which it strives to join one day,” said Mitsotakis.
