Mitsotakis: Greeks waiting for Turks on path of reason, peace
Athens, 4 October 2022 (MIA) — Greece is waiting to meet "the Aegean Sea's other side" on the path of reason and peace, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during a speech to the New Democracy parliamentary group and added that geography did not change, history was not being written anew, and the Greeks and Turks wanted to live peacefully, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports. Greece’s PM reiterated that his country remained firm in its positions, "armed with international law and its arguments that the world community, the European family, and friends on the other side of the Atlantic agree with." Mitsotakis pointed out that Greece's borders were "blue, and not gray" and the country also wanted "blue skies in relations with neighbors." “If there's anything that makes me optimistic, it’s that the venom in the words of the Turkish leadership ultimately does not reach our people,” he said. “Greeks and Turks are friends who want to live and prosper together in peace. They know that geography does not change if someone falsifies the maps. Our nations know agreements should be honored. They know history cannot be rewritten through rhetoric. So Greece is waiting for the Aegean Sea's other side on the path of reason and peace,” Mitsotakis said. Reiterating his support for Ukraine, he said Greece was strongly against "the violation of borders and the revival of imperialistic visions that some in our neighborhood might want to copy." The Greek PM added that Greece was also putting up strong defenses against “Moscow's attempt to turn energy into a weapon.” He also repeated the Greek proposal to introduce a natural gas price cap. “Yes, we should put a price cap on natural gas imports. We need to separate the price of natural gas from the price of electricity,” he stressed. Saying he would speak about the proposal at the EU Prague Summit later this week and at the European Council in Brussels at the end of the month, he pointed out that “whatever happens at the European level, at the national level, the Government will continue the relief measures in support of citizens.” Greece’s ruling New Democracy is celebrating its 48th anniversary on Oct. 4, and Mitsotakis said it was the party "of all Greeks who look to the future and aim high." mr/
