Skopje, 27 January 2026 (MIA) – Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Tuesday he expected the issue facing Macedonian truck drivers to be settled, who have been protesting alongside transporters from the Western Balkans since Monday by blocking border crossings to demand that the electronic entry and exit check system (EES) in the Schengen zone should be amended in line with the 90/180 rule.
The issue has been raised with the European Commission since September, he told reporters, and Timcho Mucunski, the minister in charge of foreign affairs and foreign trade, is in charge with the talks.
“I requested a phone call with the European Commission President [Ursula von der Leyen], who has been on an official trip to India. I expect to have a phone call with her these days to discuss this matter and to put it again on the table with the colleagues from the region. The EU has a Schengen mechanism it is applying and we are seeking a way to meet the demands of transporters,” Mickoski stated after a working visit to the Skopje municipality of Gazi Baba.
