Mickoski: Macedonian Army will continue to be present in region, won’t send soldiers to Ukraine

Skopje, 13 March 2025 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski assessed the initiative of the United States for a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia as an “important step towards a lasting peace”. The “price of peace”, according to the PM, will be a result of the negotiations.

In an interview for Kanal 5 TV on Thursday, the Prime Minister said a ceasefire is necessary “to catalyze a solution that will bring lasting peace”.

“I think a ceasefire is necessary and for negotiations to last as much as necessary to catalyze a solution that will bring a lasting peace,” the PM said.

According to Mickoski, the results of the negotiations “will bring a more peaceful future for all of us”.

The PM he said he opposes any redrawing of borders.

“We should be aware that precedents must not happen in international law, if they happen once, they can become a practice,” Mickoski said.

Asked about potential deployments in Ukraine, the Prime Minister stressed it is “logical” for the Macedonian Army to be present in the region, and the country has done what it could as a NATO ally, noting Ukraine is not a part of the region.

“Our interest is within the region, and we will look after our interest. In terms of deploying soldiers, I don’t believe this Government would make a decision in favor of an offensive mission. We are already deploying and will continue to deploy peacekeepers within the region, we don’t see Ukraine as part of the region,” Mickoski said.

Asked about the country’s co-sponsorship of the US resolution on Ukraine in the United Nations, the Prime Minister said the decision was based on a belief that “the Trump administration has a clear plan”.

“We believe that the Trump administration has a clear plan for an end to the conflict in Ukraine, and we want to follow that example openly manifested by [US President Donald] Trump,” the Prime Minister said.
