Mickoski: Independence not just signature on paper but sacrifice, struggle, love for this sacred land

Skopje, 8 September 2025 (MIA) - September 8 is not just a date or coincidence, it is a continuity of one of the smaller nations in Europe and a result of many battles of this people. Today, we are again facing times that require courage and commitment. And again, we must make the right choice - the one of work, togetherness, the future we leave for our children. Independence is not just a signature on paper, it is a sacrifice, struggle, love for this sacred land. It is a testament of our ancestors but also a pledge for future generations. Let's unite, said Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski at the academy marking the country's 34th independence anniversary in Skopje on Monday.

Referring to the 34 years of independence, PM Mickoski said that he and all those after him are obligated to bow before the ones who had spoken about independence and shared the hope and aspiration for an own country.

"In this address, I am not talking about partisan bickering between VMRO and SDSM, nor it is my objective to see through the prism of partisan battles, but to focus on statehood positions that all those who carry responsibility must have in their political analyses. A dissatisfaction from the system comes from improper way of doing politics, the extremely difficult transition process, enormous crime that has eaten the core of our society, the injustice people are seeing, the fact that many who led the country were part of the crime cancer while laughing in the face of justice. And that is why there is an overwhelming impression of rich people who made money in a dishonest way but are not behind bars. This must change, and justice does not distinguish the political party or the amount of money one has. Those who think they are protected from being held responsible should know - justice will come, sooner or later," said Mickoski.

The PM added that he has not forgotten about the citizens since day one from taking office, noting that the country has a future and everyone must contribute.

"I did not come to the position to make a fortune or name for myself. I came to the post in order to leave a mark and together create a future for my and all of our children. Since assuming office, I have not forgotten to look into the people's eyes, shake their hands and commend them for their contribution. These hands feed Macedonia and carry the burden we all must take a share in. We must be selfless and give. Our homeland has a future and we all must contribute, but also speak clearly about the things that pose a threat to our society," said Mickoski.
