MFA: EP corrects ‘northmacedonian’ error following reaction

Skopje, 16 April 2024 (MIA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release Tuesday it issued a reaction to the European Parliament over the use of the adjective “northmacedonian” on its website, after which the mistake was corrected.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia continually highlights the correct usage of the constitutional name of the country and the nationality of the citizens of North Macedonia. As we have reacted appropriately to all international media, entities, etc., who wrongly used any of these terms, we also issued a reaction to the European Parliament over this specific case, requesting the correct use of the terms, in line with the Constitution and the country’s ID at the United Nations. Additionally, we would like to confirm that the mistake was immediately corrected following our reaction,” the Ministry said.

A document that referred to the country’s government as “northmacedonian” was published on the European Parliament’s website on Monday.

According to the Prespa Agreement, the adjectival reference to the country, its official organs and other public entities should be in line with the official name of the country or its short name, i.e., “of the Republic of North Macedonia” or “of North Macedonia”.
