Mexhiti: New chief prosecutor should be a professional to contribute to restoring citizens' trust

Skopje, 12 February 2025 (MIA) – First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Izet Mexhiti, regarding the government’s decision to initiate procedure for the dismissal of the Chief Prosecutor Ljupcho Kocevski, stated that it is a result of Kocevski's continuous legal violations.

“This procedure is in line with the expectations of the international community and strategic partners, aiming to address violations wherever they occur. Secondly, public confidence in the judicial system has been at its lowest point since the 1990s and is nearly nonexistent. Thirdly, Chief Prosecutor Kocevski continued committing legal violations, leading to a situation where his dismissal became unavoidable,” Mexhiti said in an interview with Alsat TV.

According to Mexhiti, the new Chief Prosecutor should be a professional who will help restore citizens' trust in the rule of law.

Regarding the legal solution for fair and adequate representation of Albanians, Mexhiti stated that it is in its final phase and that this week the final meeting is expected to take place to align the views between Worth It, VMRO-DPMNE, and ZNAM.

“We have essentially aligned our positions, and I am confident that by the end of next week, we will come up with a legal solution or a separate law for fair and adequate representation of Albanians, as until now, it was just a mechanism, not a true legal solution,” Mexhiti said.
