Istanbul, 15 July 2022 (dpa/MIA) - Former Germany midfielder Mesut Özil has signed a one-year contract at Basaksehir, the 2020 Turkish league champions said on Thursday.
"I am very happy," the 2014 World Cup winner said at the signing ceremony.
Basaksehir president Göksel Gümüsdag said that Özil had been offered a two-year contract but that the midfielder had preferred a one-year deal with an option for a second season.
The deal comes a day after another Istanbul club, Fenerbahce, said that Özil's contract was terminated by mutual consent.
Özil, 33, joined Fenerbahce last year from England's Arsenal but was suspended from the squad in March. He said last month he still wanted to fulfil his contract until 2024.
Fenerbahce never revealed why the 2014 World Cup winner was suspended. Club president Ali Koc had said in November that Özil should concentrate on football and not on his business activities.
