Merz hails Trump's move to boost weapons deliveries for Ukraine

Berlin, 15 July 2025 (dpa/MIA) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has praised US President Donald Trump's plans to supply Ukraine with weapons "on a large scale," as Merz described it.

"President Trump and I have discussed this several times in recent days. I assured him: Germany will play an active role," Merz wrote on X on Monday.

Trump has stated that the US would deliver Patriot air defence systems to help Kiev fend off the Russians, but the EU would cover the costs. Previously, Merz had already expressed Germany's willingness to purchase Patriots from the US for Ukraine.

Reports say this involves two systems, with another to be financed by Norway. Ukraine has identified a need for a total of 10 systems.

"We are doing this in our own interest," Merz continued on X. "This will help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's bombing terror. Only in this way will the pressure on Moscow increase to finally negotiate peace. Ultimately, we are demonstrating that we are pulling together as security policy partners."

Details are now being swiftly clarified, Merz added, noting that the German government is in contact with its partners.

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is in Washington for talks on the issue.
