Brussels, 7 July 2025 (MIA) — European Parliament's July plenary session begins in Strasbourg and one item on the agenda is the evaluation of the progress report by Thomas Waitz on the country's EU path, MIA's Brussels correspondent reports.
Through Thursday, the European lawmakers will also discuss the priorities of Denmark’s Council Presidency, debate EU-US trade relations as well as vote on a motion of censure against the Commission.
According to a press release from the EP, lawmakers will review Tuesday the EU accession progress of North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia. Four reports will be put to a vote Wednesday.
In reports adopted in June 2025, EP's Committee on Foreign Affairs encourages North Macedonia to continue reform efforts and adopt certain constitutional amendments, despite the government facing political challenges and public frustration. MEPs commend Albania’s commitment to meeting the EU’s membership criteria, welcoming its aim to finalize accession talks by 2027.
The report on Bosnia and Herzegovina praises the European Council’s decision to open accession negotiations with the country. MEPs acknowledge important legal revisions the government there has made, but are concerned about the stalled progress and weak implementation. On Georgia, the committee condemns the continued democratic backsliding and repression, and demands new parliamentary elections. MEPs refuse to recognise the legitimacy of Georgia’s current one-party Parliament and President.
North Macedonia was granted EU candidate status in 2005, Albania in 2014, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2022 and Georgia in 2023.
A press conference with the rapporteurs on Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia will be held at 2 pm, the release said. mr/
