Many dead in Russian nightclub fire; suspect detained
Moscow, 5 November 2022 (dpa/MIA) — At least 13 people have died in a large fire and ceiling collapse at a popular nightclub in the Russian city of Kostroma. The Russian Interior Ministry said it had detained a suspect who is believed to have caused the fire. The fire spread rapidly over an area of about 3,500 square meters inside the building, the authorities announced on Saturday. The roof of the Poligon club, which has been popular for decades, then collapsed. Russian state television reported that 250 people had been rescued. Five people were injured, the authorities said. However, the exact number of casualties still had to be assessed, according to the Investigative Committee in Moscow. The cause of the fire was not clear. Local media, citing investigators, reported that the suspect may have lit a firework inside the building. The authorities said there had been no recent fire safety inspection in the building. Its owner is believed to be a member of the regional parliament in Kostroma, a city more than 300 kilometers north-east of Moscow. He expressed his grief in a message and that he would help the relatives of the dead and the injured, state news agency TASS reported.
