Manchevski’s Kajmak to have its world premiere in Tokyo in October
Skopje, 21 September 2022 (MIA) – I try to make “glocal” movies – ones that are both local and global, said film director Milcho Manchevski at the press conference announcing that the world premiere of his latest work "Kajmak" will take at the Tokyo Festival next month.
Kajmak will be in the official run for awards. Two screenings are planned so far, on October 26 and 29, but there will likely be a third screening as well.
Macedonian cinema goers, said producer Jane Kjortoshev, will get a chance to watch the movie in movie theaters soon, hopefully mid-November, at a gala premiere. The movie will be shown on the Macedonian National Television by the end of next year.
"Kajmak" is a dark comedy set in modern-day Skopje. It was shot last summer in an extremely professional atmosphere. It’s a European co-production between North Macedonia, Denmark, the Netherlands and Croatia, including film workers from England, Italy and Serbia. It’s been co-produced by Makedonska Televizija and the European fund Euroimage.
“The world premiere will take place in the far east, at an A-list festival and one of the greatest in the world, the Tokyo festival. This gives the movie a wonderful start. I’m sure that it will have a rich festival life, and it will be brought to this country soon after its world premiere,” Kjortoshev said.
According to Bojan Lazarevski, director of the Film Agency, there are no borders for Macedonian cinematography, and the premiere in Tokyo of Kajmak will add value to Macedonian cinematography which is equal to European cinematography.
Minister of Culture, Bisera Kostadinovska Stojchevska, also attended the press conference and congratulated Manchevski and the whole crew.
“The world premiere in Tokyo is a great success for the film and for Macedonian cinematography and culture. Manchevski's films affirm the Macedonian culture and state across all continents and are a lasting value of contemporary Macedonian cinema, said the minister.
When asked to briefly describe the film, Manchevski said that every good film starts from local soil, from a local source.
“I don't sit down with an agenda, to say "here we are going to make a local or universal film". Every good movie contains the DNA of the place it comes from, but it can be enjoyed and understood anywhere in the world. Whether or not they will be universally recognized is a question of the skill of the author and of the subject. Kajmak is an outrageous tragedy, we had an incredible cast, the actors were a level higher than the world's, and the motto of the film is "It takes three to tango". You will see the rest soon,” Manchevski said..
The World Film Festival in Tokyo begins on October 23, and the press conference and press screening of "Kajmak" are scheduled for October 27. On that day, Manchevski said, the planned master class for the Japanese and other students will most likely be held. dk/ba/
