Paris, 27 April 2022 (dpa/MIA) — The Constitutional Council in Paris on Wednesday officially confirmed Emmanuel Macron's re-election to a second term as president of France. Certification of the victory came a short time after he managed to dodge tomatoes thrown in his direction during his first public appearance since Sunday's vote. Macron was walking through a market in Cergy, a working-class new town north-west of Paris, when a bag of tomatoes was launched at him. They missed and hit another man. Security force personnel protectively raised their hands over the president's head and opened an umbrella. Videos also showed Macron being booed by some people at the market, although others were happy to meet and greet him. Photo: Ludovic Marin/AFP/dpa[/caption] According to the final result of the second-round election, centrist Macron received 58.55% of the votes while his far-right rival, Marine Le Pen, garnered 41.45%. Voter turnout was 71.9%. Over 2.2 million voters cast a blank ballot because neither of the two candidates appealed to them. Macron's second five-year term begins on May 14. But the ability of Macron to enact his agenda will depend upon whether he can secure a ruling majority in June's parliamentary elections. The 44-year-old sought to alter his image as a politician from the Paris elite during campaigning. He is frequently accused by detractors of arrogance and condescension.
