Skopje, 25 September 2024 (MIA) — The popular Macedonian writer of books for young readers Gorjan Petrevski's book "The Same Eyes," published in Bulgarian in 2024 by Izida, will be featured at the 13th Literature Night in Sofia. Excerpts from the book will be read by actors at one of the event's so-called "reading nests," organizers said.

According to the Cultural and Information Center of the Republic of North Macedonia in Sofia, works by international authors will be read "in atypical spaces for literature" in ten cities across Bulgaria. 

The Sofia reading sessions will take place between 6 pm and 9:30 pm at various locations where actors, journalists, translators, musicians, and authors will read excerpts from 19 books by writers from 19 different countries. 

Excerpts from Petrevski's novel will be read by actor and director Gjorgi Georgiev Antika and actor Igor Damjanov at the Macedonian Reading Nest.

The authors and their book excerpts to be read are chosen by the embassies and cultural institutions of their respective countries.

In addition to Petrevski's, this year's Sofia event features the works of:

- Italian philosopher and novelist Umberto Eco; 

- Bulgarian film critic and journalist Bozhidar Manov; 

- Austrian writer and poetry filmmaker Sophie Reyer; 

- Irish author writing in multiple genres Colm Tóibín; 

- Belgian novelist and playwright Annelies Verbeke; 

- German writer and translator Dagmar Leupold; 

- Portuguese journalist and novelist José Rodrigues dos Santos;

- Danish writer of fiction Peter Høeg; 

- Dutch writer of books for young readers Anna Woltz; 

- Slovenian novelist and screenwriter Goran Vojnović; 

- Greek poets Kostas Mavroudis and Ursula Foskolou; 

- Spanish writers Juan José Millás and Juan Luis Arsuaga; 

- New Zealand novelist and screenwriter Eleanor Catton;

- Polish poet and novelist Paweł Huelle; 

- late Ukrainian novelist and war crimes researcher Victoria Amelina;

- Hungarian writer and photographer Attila Bartis; 

- Czech performance artist and writer Miřenka Čechová; and

- French writer and translator Étienne Barillier.

Three of them — Manov, Leupold, and Petrevski — will attend the readings in person.

Literature Night is a 2006 initiative of Czech cultural centers worldwide to popularize contemporary poetry and fiction through a series of public readings in different cities around the world. Literature Night events have been held in Bulgaria since 2012. mr/
