Macedonia should change Constitution to make progress in EU accession, says enlargement commissioner

Brussels, 14 January 2025 (MIA) - North Macedonia should demonstrate will to change the Constitution in order to make progress in the EU accession process, European Commissioner on Enlargement Marta Kos told a discussion with members of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) on Tuesday.

"We hope that Macedonia will fulfill the commitment to change the Constitution and then I am sure, once we start rolling with North Macedonia, also with the support of Bulgaria, we can go on," said Commissioner Kos in an answer to a question by Bulgarian MEP Andrey Kovatchev.

She highlighted the complexity of the enlargement process, noting that 150 decisions are needed that require consensus among EU members in order to start and finish the negotiating process of a candidate-state, while adding that everything should be done to avoid bilateral issues influencing the negotiations.

"However, this is already happening and will happen in the future, but it is our task to solve them once they emerge," said Kos and added that candidates implementing the required reforms should benefit from their efforts.

She noted there is a real chance to bring one, two or even candidate countries to the finish line during the European Commission's current term.
