Berlin, 9 October 2023 (dpa/MIA) - The Greens suffered major losses as the opposition Christian Social People's Party (CSV) secured the most seats in Luxembourg's parliamentary elections on Sunday.

The Greens lost five seats in the Chamber of Deputies, while the conservative CSV kept 21 seats in the 60 member chamber.

"Luxembourgers have given the CSV a clear mandate to form the next government," CSV lead candidate Luc Frieden said.

The Greens' top candidate Sam Tanson said the election result was a "huge disappointment."

"I had hoped to deliver a better record," said Tanson, after the election result ended the three-party coalition led by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel of the Democratic Party (DP) and the Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) since 2013.

The three-party coalition will control 29 seats, below the threshold for a majority.

Bettel's DP party had a strong outing, gaining two seats, and is likely going to form a coalition government with the CSV.

"The DP has a responsibility to continue," said Bettel.

Another potential candidate for the coalition would be the LSAP. Their candidate, Paulette Lenert, said she was ready to discuss a potential coalition.

Voting was compulsory in the EU's second-smallest nation, home to some 660,00 people. Some 88,000 nationals living abroad are exempt from the rule.

About 284,000 people were eligible to vote in the small, wealthy European Union nation.
