Louvre closes 'for security reasons' amid terrorism alert in France

Paris, 14 October 2023 (dpa/MIA) - The Louvre museum in Paris closed on Saturday "for security reasons" as France remains on high alert following a deadly school stabbing that authorities are treating as a terrorist attack.

The world-famous museum home to masterpieces like the "The Mona Lisa" announced its closure on social media, but did not specify the nature of the threat.

Broadcaster BFMTV reported, citing police sources, that the museum had received bomb threats.

Louvre visitors posted videos of throngs of people evacuating the sprawling complex in central Paris.

The incident comes a day after a teacher in the northern city of Arras was fatally stabbed, prompting France to impose its highest terrorism alert.

The 20-year-old suspect was reportedly known to authorities as a radicalized Islamist. BFMTV reported that he shouted "God is greatest" in Arabic before attacking. Three people were seriously injured.
