Lloga: Constitution prohibits death penalty

Skopje, 4 December 2023 (MIA) — Expressing his condolences to the families of the murdered Vanja Gjorchevska and Panche Zhezhovski, Justice Minister Krenar Lloga said Monday he hoped the perpetrators would receive the harshest penalty for their crime.

Asked by a journalist about introducing the death penalty, Minister Lloga said he was as angry as every member of the public right now but the Constitution prohibited the death penalty as do other protocols and conventions the country has signed.

"I am one of the citizens who think the death penalty would be a salvation for those monsters," he added. "They should be sentenced to life in prison, with their conscience about what they have done."

The maximum penalty that a court can impose in this case is a life sentence.

"I trust in both the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor's Office, and that ultimately, the court will give these monsters the punishment they deserve," Lloga said. mr/
