Ljube Boshkoski acquitted in 'Campaign' case

Ljube Boshkoski acquitted in 'Campaign' case
Skopje, 22 February 2023 (MIA) - The Basic Criminal Court acquitted former minister of interior Ljube Boshkoski in case "Campaign" after a retrial based on a judgment of the European Court of Human Rights.

Back in 2011, Boshkoski, leader of United for Macedonia party and a Government advisor, was arrested in downtown Skopje under the suspicion of illegal financing of an election campaign and was sentenced to five years in prison in 2014. He was released from prison two years later.

In 2020, the ECHR ruled that Boshkoski's rights to a fair trial were violated, which prompted a retrial at the request of his lawyers.

In 2017, the now-defunct Special Prosecutor's Office indicted former secret police chief Sasho Mijalkov and seven members of special police unit "Alfa" for torture and inhuman treatment when arresting Boshkoski, but the Criminal Court acquitted them in 2021.
