Berlin, 27 August 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Bayer Leverkusen announced on Tuesday that they have signed former Real Madrid star Lucas Vázquez.

The 34-year-old joins on a free transfer after his contract with Real Madrid expired at the end of last season, the Bundesliga club announced.

Vázquez signed a contract with Leverkusen that runs until June 2027. He will wear the number 21 jersey.

"In Lucas Vázquez we have signed an extremely experienced player who has won everything there is to win with Real Madrid over the last 10 years," Leverkusen's sporting director Simon Rolfes said in a club statement.

"Lucas will have a great influence on our game with his football finesse and special routine and he will become a key part of our team," Rolfes added.

Vázquez played for Madrid from 2015 until his contract ran out in July. During this period, he won the Champions League five times and La Liga four times.

Vázquez may not be Leverkusen's only new addition. According to Kicker, the club are also interested in AS Monaco winger Eliesse Ben Seghir and Argentine defensive midfielder Ezequiel Fernández from Saudi side Al-Qadisiya FC.

Leverkusen suffered a summer exodus from coach Xabi Alonso to key players Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka and Jonathan Tah.

Defenders Arthur and Piero Hincapie could be the next ones to leave. According to media reports, Arthur is in talks with Paris FC, while Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in Hincapie.
