Lebanon forms long-awaited government amid deep economic crisis

Lebanon forms long-awaited government amid deep economic crisis
Lebanon has formed a long-awaited government comprising 24 ministers in an effort to tackle the country's worst economic crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war ended. Billionaire businessman Najib Mikati, 66 - who was chosen to form a government in July - has presented his Cabinet line-up to President Michel Aoun. Mikati is the third person to be asked to form a government since Hassan Diab's government resigned in the wake of the massive explosion at Beirut's port on August 4, 2020. On July 15, prime minister-designate Saad Hariri stepped down citing political infighting. The rivalry among Lebanese political parties has been the main cause of the year-long struggle to form a government. As a result, the country is suffering from an economic depression. According to a recent UN report, more than 70 per cent of Lebanon’s 6 million people are now living below the poverty line.
