Kovachevski-Osmani: Plan of activities arising from U.S. Strategic Dialogue adopted, rule of law and fight against corruption given priority

Skopje, 7 February 2023 (MIA) - The Government has adopted the plan of activities arising from the Strategic Dialogue with the United States, thus giving a strong signal that the U.S. is our strategic partner, an aspect that is very important for North Macedonia, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski on Tuesday.

"I believe the challenges are never that difficult when you have friends and partners. Looking back, North Macedonia has faced enormous challenges, made even more difficult decisions, but the U.S. support throughout this time was of enormous importance for us. Our strategic partner was and still is supporting the country's European perspective," PM Kovachevski told a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani.

He added that the unconditional readiness of the U.S. administration to undertake all measures needed so that our country completes the EU accession negotiations as soon as possible is of enormous importance for North Macedonia but is also in the U.S. strategic interest.

"This dialogue encompasses current security developments and bilateral cooperation as NATO partners," said Kovachevski.

The PM noted that strengthening of bilateral relations with the U.S. means modern legislation, unequivocal fight against corruption and crime, fair judiciary but also legal and economic security.

FM Osmani said the first field of intensive cooperation and a priority activity within the plan of activities is the rule of law and fight against corruption.

"We have added a specific chapter in the plan of activities related to implementation of anti-corruption policies, including activities aimed to support judicial reforms by sharing expert knowledge, with a focus on increasing the credibility and trust in the judiciary," said Osmani.

He added that cooperation is set to also strengthen in the sectors of defense, as NATO allies and other security segments.

"This includes joint training and exercises, as well as support and modernization of North Macedonia's Army," said Osmani.

On economic cooperation, the FM highlighted the planned cooperation with the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the opening of a regional office of this institution in North Macedonia.

"We have also included projects that aim to overcome energy challenges we are all facing, such as drafting of a plan to support energy diversification, organization of a large business forum and touring potential U.S. investors, along with a direct Skopje-New York flight that would strengthen bilateral ties," said Osmani.

He also referred to the prospect of North Macedonia joining the U.S. Global Entry Program.

"The first meeting has already taken place towards our future accession to the Global Entry Program, which key benefits are unhindered entry of our nationals holding a visa in the United States without going through the security and customs checks at border crossings. On the long run, the Strategic Dialogue also envisages activities towards the country being included in the Visa Waiver Program that would eventually lead to a visa-free regime," said Osmani.

The plan of activities also includes projects from the fields of culture, education and bringing people from both countries closer.
