Kovachevski: We intend to implement a vetting process in next term

Skopje, 26 December 2023 (MIA) - If given the opportunity to lead the government, we will implement vetting process in the next term, extending beyond appointed and elected officials – from the Prime Minister to ministers, and all the way to customs, courts, and prosecutors, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski said during Tuesday's press conference responding to a journalist's question to comment on a survey indicating that 80 percent of citizens consider corruption to be the biggest problem in the country.
"There is a process that will be implemented in the country, and that is the vetting process for appointed and elected officials. However, it may need to be expanded to include individuals and legal entities. Albania has implemented this process. In our country, the government wanted to implement it, but it was hindered by the EU, and I do not know the reasons for that. Nevertheless, no one will hinder this process in the upcoming elections, when we have the opportunity to lead the government again. In this procedure, we will accurately identify those in favour of progress, those advocating improvement, and those unable to fulfil specific functions. This comprehensive approach will include everyone," Kovachevski said.
In his view, it's a fact that citizens precisely identify what needs to be addressed in the country. Additionally, he highlighted that it's equally a fact that the government is working on continual improvements and advancements in areas crucial to the citizens.
“You're aware that when unemployment was a major concern for citizens, the government implemented successful measures that reduced unemployment from 25 percent to 13 percent, later further decreasing to 11 percent. In terms of citizens' incomes, the average salary has reached Mden 39,000. This represents a significant increase, exceeding 50 percent compared to seven years ago. Pensions have been raised by 50 percent. The student standard of living has improved, with a meal provided for every student. A considerable number of issues are being addressed,” Kovachevski noted.
In the context of combating crime, he pointed out the Ministry of Interior's data, indicating a 50 percent increase in the detection of such offenses in recent years.
“One important aspect to bear in mind is the EU peer review mission regarding the Judicial Council, which encompasses over 40 recommendations that should become part of the action plan in the field of the rule of law. I express my complete support for all 40 of these recommendations,” Kovachevski said at a press conference, highlighting the support extended to companies through the Development Bank.
