Kovachevski: Increased electricity production opens possibility to reinstate low electricity tariff
Skopje, 23 February 2023 (MIA) - From January 1 to February 8, 2023, ESM has produced over 720,000 MWh of electricity, which is 40 percent more than the same period last year, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski told Thursday's Q&A session in Parliament.
 
 
"According to official January reports, for the first time after 15 years, as much as 87 percent of the total electricity needs in the country are provided by domestic production facilities, while only 13 percent are provided by imports," said Kovachevski. 
 
 
The PM pointed out that the announcements of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) that analyzes are underway on the possibility of reinstating the cheap electricity tariff during the day are to be welcomed, stressing that the increased production of electricity opens such possibilities.
 
 
He noted that the effect of the increased electricity production, as well as the timely measures to subsidize the electricity for the companies, can already be seen in retail, and is also confirmed by the latest report of the State Market Inspectorate on the conducted controls. 
 
 
Kovachevski added that in order to help small consumers who are on the regulated market, costs as of January 1 have been reduced by 20 percent. This price, he noted, is applied to 70,000 companies in the country, which in the past period were facing increased electricity costs.
