Skopje, 22 November 2022 (MIA) - A two-third majority to amend the Constitution and to resume on the country's EU path is not needed solely for the government and Parliament. It is not a process of only one party, it is the process that involves all political parties represented in Parliament, tasked with securing European future of the country, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski stated Tuesday. He spoke to members of the media after the second Socio-Ecological Forum, where he was asked if he would support early elections if his government failed to secure two-third majority to change the Constitution. The event is organized in Skopje by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), Olof Palme International Center and the Progres Institute for Social Democracy. "61 MPs elect a government and 80 MPs are sufficient for a two-third majority. It is the responsibility of all political parties to fulfill what had been established back in 1991 by our previous generation - an independent Macedonian state that is a member of both NATO and the EU," said Kovachevski. Parliament, he added, will pass many other decisions, not just this one, because EU accession requires us to implement a lot of reforms. "This is why I've said the opposition must be included in implementing the reform laws. The best place for that to happen is the national committee for European integration, led by the opposition, where discussions should happen," said the PM. The lawmakers represent the citizens, and the citizens are those who expect to live in a full-fledged member of the EU, according to him. "One of the decisions we have to make on our way to EU membership is to change the Constitution's preamble," PM Kovachevski concluded.
