Kosovo holding local elections

Kosovo holding local elections

Zagreb, 12 October 2025 (Hina/MIA) - Kosovo is holding local elections on Sunday to choose mayors and councillors in 38 municipalities, with over two million registered voters eligible to cast ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voters will choose among 206 mayoral candidates, including 20 women, and 5,420 candidates for council members. The process is being monitored by the police, prosecutor's office, election complaints commission, Judicial Council and Independent Media Commission.

The Central Election Commission has approved 32 political parties, two coalitions, 32 civic initiatives and 27 independent candidates.

Among 12 Serbian parties and initiatives, the Serb List, backed by Belgrade and affiliated with Serbia’s ruling Progressive Party, is the dominant force. Its leaders described the vote as “crucial for Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija,” calling for unity to oust "illegitimate Albanian mayors” in the Serb-majority north and reclaim control of four municipalities.

The Serb List is taking part after boycotting the previous local elections, which enabled ethnic Albanian mayors to take office in the north with a turnout of just 3.4% in May 2023.

Serbian Radio-Election reporters said police have stepped up checks at entry points as displaced Serbs from central Serbia travel to Kosovo to vote.
