Khvicha Kvaratskhelia off mark for PSG in comfortable win over Monaco

London, 8 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored his first goal for Paris Saint-Germain as the leaders eased themselves 13 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table with a 4-1 win over third-placed Monaco.

The Georgia international, a January signing from Napoli, restored PSG’s lead at the Parc des Princes after Denis Zakaria had cancelled out Vitinha’s opener, although it was Ousmane Dembele who wrapped up a 16th win of a so far unbeaten league campaign with a double.

On a night when the club announced after kick-off that head coach Luis Enrique had extended his contract until 2027 and players Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha and Nuno Mendez until 2029 with Yoram Zague committing himself until the summer of 2028, they climbed further clear of Marseille, who head for Angers on Sunday.

For Enrique, victory with the minimum of fuss provided the ideal preparation for Tuesday night’s Champions League play-off, first leg trip to compatriots Brest.

Takumi Minamino had served warning of the visitors’ intent when he tested keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with a fifth-minute strike after being set up by Maghnes Akliouche, although it proved something of a false dawn within seconds.

Midfielder Zakaria was penalised for a foul on Desire Doue and Vitinha stepped up to beat Radoslaw Majecki from the resulting free-kick.

However, Zakaria atoned for his error within 11 minutes when he ran on to Soungoutou Magassa’s through-ball and beat Donnarumma from a tight angle to level.

Vitinha and Zakaria exchanged further efforts before Vanderson fired high and wide as Monaco more than made a game of it.

Dembele went close for the hosts seven minutes before the break and Doue chanced his arm in stoppage time after being played through by Kvaratskhelia, but the sides were locked together at 1-1 when the whistle sounded.

The reigning champions flexed their muscles after the restart and regained the lead within nine minutes of their return when the Georgian fired home after being set up by Bradley Barcola.

Kvaratskhelia might have doubled his tally within two minutes with Barcola once again providing the ammunition, but this time Majecki was equal to the task.

But the respite proved fleeting and Dembele made it 3-1 with 57 minutes gone after accepting Doue’s pass.

Majecki denied Doue a fourth before Akliouche went close to reducing the deficit, but Fabian Ruiz, Dembele and substitute Goncalo Ramos all threatened at the other end before Dembele struck from close range at the death.
