Kane makes Bundesliga debut with goal to help Bayern defeat Bremen

Berlin, 19 August 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Top Bayern Munich signing Harry Kane made his Bundesliga debut with a goal and an assist as the Bavarians started their title defence with a 4-0 win at Werder Bremen on Friday.

"Extremely exited to get the season started with my new club, a massive club like Bayern Munich. For sure there were a few butterflies," Kane told broadcasters DAZN.

The England captain had already made his debut for Bayern in the 3-0 Super Cup defeat to RB Leipzig last week as a substitute.

Against Bremen, Kane was in the starting line-up and provided the assist for Leroy Sané's opener in the fourth minute.

After a Bremen attack broke down, Sané traded passes on halfway with Kane and raced away, before slotting the ball past Jiri Pavlenka from inside the box.

Kane was denied by Pavlenka in the 61st, but the keeper couldn't do anything when the England forward was found by Alphonso Davies completely unmarked and fired the ball into the net in the 74th.

A brilliant first-touch football between Thomas Müller and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting culminated in a brace for Sané in the 90th and Mathys Tel completed the scoring with a stunner in stoppage time.

Kane went down with what looked like cramp in the 82nd. He came back to the pitch, but was subbed off shortly after.

"It was a good night, it was a tough game for sure. We started well with the goal in the first few minutes. Bremen came out in the second half and had a few chances, made it difficult.

"But it was nice to get that second goal and then the boys from the bench finished the game for us," Kane said.

Bremen had a goal disallowed in the eight minute after forward Niclas Füllkrug found the net in offside position, but couldn't find their way back into the net in a game dominated by Bayern.

Füllkrug said he "can't yet say where we stand" after Bremen suffered a second setback this season following the German Cup first round elimination to third division team Viktoria Cologne.

Asked about his future at the club, he said he was "not interessed" in answering the question and that the topic was "completely uninteresting."

Füllkrug was last season's Bundesliga top scorer with 16 goals alongside then RB Leipzig winger Christopher Nkunku. He has a contract with Bremen until June 2025, but his good performances also for the Germany national team have attracted the attention of other European clubs.

The first Bundesliga matchday continues on Saturday, when runners-up Borussia Dortmund welcome Cologne and German Cup winners RB Leipzig visit Bayer Leverkusen.
