Juventus claim trophy with Coppa Italia win over Atalanta

London, 16 May 2024 (PA Media/dpa/MIA) - Juventus ended a three-year wait for a trophy as Dusan Vlahovic’s early goal secured a 1-0 win over Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico.

Vlahovic held his nerve after being slipped through by Andrea Cambiaso, with the Serbian striker holding off the challenge of Isak Hien before slotting past Marco Carnesecchi in the fourth minute.

The Bianconeri absorbed some pressure from Atalanta and Vlahovic thought he had put the tie to bed by heading home although the effort was chalked off for offside in a frenetic final quarter of an hour.

Massimiliano Allegri saw red deep into time added-on after furiously removing his jacket and confronting the fourth official but that did not derail Juventus as they claimed a record-extending 15th win in this competition.

This was a rematch of the 2021 showpiece won by Juventus, who hit the front early on and perhaps should have been 2-0 up within 10 minutes only for Hans Nicolussi Caviglia to head over from close range.

Atalanta steadily grew into the match, often penning Juventus deep into their own half, but they were unable to create anything substantial while Caviglia and Cambiaso were off-target with long-range efforts at the other end.

Ademola Lookman threatened after half-time but his effort whistled wide while Juventus were indignant when their penalty appeals were waved away after Hien’s shoulder barge on Vlahovic in the area.

Vlahovic saw one effort saved by Carnesecchi before beating the Atalanta goalkeeper again, only for the effort to be chalked off by VAR because of a marginal offside call in the build-up.

Both sides hit the frame of the goal – Atalanta the post through Lookman while Juventus’ Fabio Miretti saw his strike cannon off the crossbar – before Allegri was given his marching orders on the touchline.

Ederson had a late chance but Mattia Perin saved well for Juventus as Atalanta faced up to a third cup final defeat in the last six years.
