Italy's Meloni receives vote of confidence in the Senate
Rome, 27 October 2022 (dpa/MIA) - The new Italian government under far-right leader Giorgia Meloni received its second and final vote of confidence on Wednesday.
In the vote in the Senate, the prime minister and her Cabinet received the necessary absolute majority. The Chamber of Deputies had voted in favour of her new right-wing alliance the day before.
In the smaller Senate, 115 of the 200 parliamentarians present voted for Meloni, who took office as Italy's first female prime minister over the weekend.
Success in parliament was virtually assured for the 45-year-old, as her coalition holds a majority in both chambers. In the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday, 235 of 389 present voted for Meloni.
Meloni has declared her support for Europe and for anchoring Italy in international alliances, but at the same time has announced proposals for modifying some rules, such as the EU's Growth and Stability Pact, which sets out how member states should pursue public finances.
She has also set out plans to prevent the arrivals of migrants from North African countries making the risky journey across the Mediterranean Sea.
In a speech in the Senate on Wednesday, she stressed that Italy would continue to support Ukraine in its fight against invading Russian forces.
Meloni emerged as the clear winner in last month's parliamentary election with her Brothers of Italy taking 26% of the vote. The ultra-right party with fascist roots was previously only a small opposition party in parliament.
Her coalition includes the far-right League party led by Matteo Salvini and centre-right Forza Italia party led by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
