Israeli officer and two Palestinians dead in West Bank gunfire

Israeli officer and two Palestinians dead in West Bank gunfire
An Israeli army officer and two armed Palestinians were killed in an exchange of fire at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday. The Israeli military said two individuals approached the border fence near the Gilboa checkpoint, which is known to Palestinians as the Jalameh crossing. Israeli soldiers initially fired warning shots in the air, according the military's account, but the Palestinians then opened fire on them. A 30-year-old Israeli officer was fatally wounded in the gunfire. The army and the Palestinian Health Ministry also confirmed the deaths of the two Palestinians. According to Israeli military information, one of the men was part of the Palestinian Authority's security service. The latter usually cooperates with the Israeli army, including in efforts to prevent attacks. The Israeli security forces have intensified raids across the West Bank following a wave of attacks in the spring that left several Israelis dead. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, nearly 100 Palestinians have been killed this year, several of them in Israeli military operations, but also in the course of their own attacks or in clashes with the army.
