Tel Aviv, 7 August 2022 (MIA) – Israel has accepted a humanitarian ceasefire proposed by Egypt, but the Palestinian Islamic Jihad has rejected the offer, Israeli Channel 12 reports citing Palestinian sources.
The report says two time slots have been proposed for a halt in hostilities, i.e. 6 am on Monday or 3 am on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Channel 12 reported that an unnamed Israeli official has confirmed “contacts” over a full ceasefire, which are also being mediated by Egypt.
Israeli sources have told Walla news site that Israel was concerned the deteriorated humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip could lead to the larger militant group, Hamas, joining the fighting.
Israeli media report that a ceasefire would allow fuel supply to the power plant in the Gaza Strip. Gaza residents now have only four hours of electricity a day.
Islamic Jihad has reportedly rejected a similar ceasefire proposal on Saturday, telling Hezbollah-affiliated Al Mayadeen TV “now is the time to respond to the crimes of the occupiers.”
