Iran: Hamas leader killed by projectile shot from outside

Tehran, 3 August 2024 (dpa/MIA) - The assassination of top Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was carried out using a short-range projectile fired from outside his guest house in the Iranian capital of Tehran, according to a new report from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The version of events put forward by the IRGC on Saturday indicated that a projectile with a warhead weighing around 7 kilograms caused the explosion that killed Haniyeh.

Saturday's is the group's third report on the attack. The statements in it cannot be independently verified.

Iran had previously rejected all speculation about the method used in the attack. US media had reported that Haniyeh was killed by an explosive device that was placed in the guest house two months before he travelled to Tehran.

In their report, the Revolutionary Guards also hold Israel responsible for the "act of terror," claiming that the country was supported by the United States.

Israel has not yet commented on the attack.

Reports about the arrest of Iranian security forces for alleged co-operation with the Israeli secret service and involvement in the attack have also not yet been officially confirmed.
