Investigators search Skopje care homes over reports of elder abuse

Skopje, 7 October 2025 (MIA) — After receiving reports of inhumane treatment of elderly people at aged care facilities in Skopje, prosecutors and police searched the premises of several nursing homes, the Primary Public Prosecutor's Office said in a press release Tuesday.

"After we gathered sufficient information confirming the grounds for suspicion, searches were conducted yesterday at four locations related to two private institutions for assisted living for seniors. Today, another two locations were searched and two people have been taken into custody," the release said.

The searches were performed in the presence of social workers, representatives of the Ministry of Social Policy, Demography and Youth, and inspectors from the State Sanitary and Health Inspectorate, the Food and Veterinary Agency and the State Labor Inspectorate.

Emergency doctors and forensic physicians were also involved, the release said. The authorities say they are working to solve the case. mr/
