Injured passengers in hospital after deadly Air India plane crash

New Delhi, 12 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) -- Some passengers have survived the deadly plane crash in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, the chief executive of Air India said Thursday.

"The injured passengers have been taken by local authorities to the nearest hospitals," said Campbell Wilson in a video statement on X.

Exact figures on the number of injured and dead were not yet available.

He confirmed there were 242 people on board Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner which was en route to London's Gatwick Airport when it crashed in a residential area shortly after take-off.

Earlier reports had suggested that no survivors were likely to be found, as the plane could be seen exploding upon crashing.

Wilson said 169 of the passengers were Indian, with 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese and one Canadian also on board.

According to local media, the plane crashed into an accommodation center for medical students, with several people reported killed.
