Gaza/Tel Aviv (dpa) - Hundreds of people were killed and injured in a hospital in the Gaza Strip during an Israeli airstrike, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Thousands of refugees were housed in the hospital, it announced on Tuesday evening. The exact number of casualties was initially unclear.

Husam Abu Safeya, head doctor for MedGlobal, a Chicago-based non-governmental organization, cited his colleague Husam Abu Safeya, a doctor working in northern Gaza as saying: “We can’t deal with the large number of deaths and injuries. Most victims are women and children sleeping in the hospital. We expect more hospitals to be bombed. There is no safe place in Gaza.”

The Israeli army is examining the reports, military spokesman Daniel Hagari was quoted as saying in Israeli media. He said the army did not yet have all the information on the incident.

"There are many airstrikes, many failed rockets and many falsified reports from Hamas," Hagari stressed according to the report.
