Heatwave to grip country through mid next week

Skopje, 3 July 2025 (MIA) - The country is bracing for several days of extreme heat as a hot air mass from the south moves on Thursday through mid next week. Daytime temperatures everywhere will climb over 30°C, set to reach over 40°C at some places, the national weather service has said.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon and overnight.

The Public Health Institute advises citizens to spend as much time in air-conditioned spaces, take lots of breaks in the shade if they have to spend time outside, avoid outdoor activity between 11:00-17:00h, as well as wear light clothing, sunglasses and hats to avoid direct sun exposure. Wearing sunscreen with a high SPF, drinking water more than usual and avoiding alcoholic beverages as well as those containing caffeine is also recommended.

In addition, it is recommended to avoid using stoves, ovens and similar devices between 11:00-17:00h.

"Chronically ill patients, especially those with cardiovascular, neurological and pulmonary diseases, need to be particularly disciplined in terms of these recommendations and take their regular therapy," notes the Public Health Institute.

The Institute underlines that citizens must seek advice or guidance from general practitioners or family doctors in case of changes in health status or any restrictions on fluid intake, therapy, etc. nn/ik/
