Skopje, 31 January 2023 (MIA) – Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine has proven that peace cannot and should not be taken for granted and that international order, irrespective of the fact that it is based on generally accepted rules, is facing serious challenges. Events over the past year represent a reminder and a warning that not everyone strives for peace, said Deputy PM for good governance policies Slavica Grkovska in Washington on Tuesday.

Deputy PM Grkovska took part at a security forum on how to prevent Russian aggression in Ukraine and the influence of China in Europe, hosted by U.S. House Representatives Robert Aderholt and Pete Sessions, the Government said in a press release.

Grkovska said the world is currently facing the largest security crisis since the end of the Cold War, noting that North Macedonia and other countries of the Western Balkans are exposed to rising Russian influence.

“North Macedonia is an excellent example for regional countries that even the goals that are most difficult to attain – NATO membership and start of EU accession talks – are possible. This requires persistence and aspiration to the objectives but also commitment to reforms that people need the most,” said Grkovska.

According to her, North Macedonia and regional states should work continuously on economic progress and development, rule of law and securing a better future for the youth, for the purpose of more efficient management of various damaging political influence.

Grkovska said double standards should be avoided and that NATO and EU member-states should serve as an example of democratic values’ observance, because this is the only way for them to focus on the future and ensure prosperity of the entire area, reads the press release.
