Greek PM Mitsotakis voices support for EU’s IGC with North Macedonia and Albania
Athens, 23 February 2022 (MIA) – We agreed to work together in order the first intergovernmental conference (IGC) [of the EU] with Albania and North Macedonia to be held as soon as possible, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Wednesday after a meeting with his Romanian counterpart Nicolae Ciucă.
The two prime ministers during their talks expressed strong support for the European perspective of the Western Balkan region, MIA’s Athens correspondent reported.
“We absolutely agree that the place of all Western Balkan countries is in Europe. We agreed to work together for the first intergovernmental conference with Albania and North Macedonia to be held soon,” Mitsotakis said.
PM Ciucă said it was concluded that Romania and Greece remain active supporters of the EU enlargement process, which has to move forward depending on the merits of every individual candidate country.
According to the Romanian PM, enlargement is a strategic investment in the stability and prosperity of the entire European continent.
Mitsotakis and Ciucă discussed a series of topics, including the situation in Ukraine. They also signed a joint declaration on improving their countries’ economic and political cooperation.
This is Greek PM Mitsotakis’ first official visit to Romania, where he also met with President Klaus Iohannis.
